Hi Friends,

The new season of Charlottesville Inside-Out (CVIO) aired this past Thursday night (I’m sorry — I’m a little behind with my blog). The show recently won two Telly Awards in the categories of “Cultural Programs” and “Television Talk Shows”, and we are very excited about season 2! CVIO will continue to air Thursday nights at 8:30pm on WHTJ Charlottesville PBS, channel 41, cable 200, digital 41.2 (and in the Richmond area on WCVE). For more information about the show, please visit: http://whtj.org/

As most of you know, I have been very involved with a children’s songwriting program called Kid Pan Alley. I was recently asked to write a piece for the upcoming Charlottesville-Albemarle Kid Pan Alley CD booklet, explaining why I am such a big fan of of the program. I’d like to share an excerpt of this piece with you:

I am so moved by this unique program, by its deceivingly simple fly-by-the-seat-of your pants approach to learning and, most importantly, the effect that it has on the children. Under the guise of songwriting, kids are given a lifelong sense of ownership and a perpetual permission slip to be creative…

My favorite part, of course, is working with the kids. Listening as they rocket-fire ideas at me so fast I almost have to duck. Gliding up and down with their voices — trying to match them note for note — as they experiment with a melody for the first time. Watching as they realize that life really is better when you work together. And my very favorite part is seeing the look of astonishment on their faces, the pride in their eyes, when Paul [Reisler] plucks one of their lyrical gems out of the air, and I write it on the board. In that moment, they too recognize that this is a jewel and — what do you know — the making of a song. Check out below for all that’s going on during Kid Pan Alley Week…

Thanks!

Terri

I’m still having a great time with music. I feel fortunate to work with incredible players. Our band has been together for over twelve years now! Not only are these guys great players, they are wonderful people; Jim Taggart, Jeff Saine, Sonny Layne, Gary Green and Kent Raine. This year I’ve also had the pleasure of working with Jeff Romano, Rick Olivarez, and Ian Gillium.

Will is now seven! He’s loves the second grade, Broadway Musicals, David Gray, and (get this!)Kiss. His two main goals, at the moment, are to get to NY to see “Wicked”and to figure out how to talk me into getting him a baby sister. I’m working on helping him with the first goal, but he’s on his own with the second!

Kid Pan Alley is pleased to announce the release of the CD, I Used to Know the Names of All the Stars, on October 4, 2008 in two gala concerts at The Paramount Theater. The concerts, at 2:00 and 7:00 pm, will feature performances of songs co-written by local elementary school students and Kid Pan Alley in the past year. Performers include children from our community, Kid Pan Alley’s Paul Reisler and Terri Allard, the Kid Pan Alley Band (Paul Reisler, Terri Allard, Steve Van Dam, Andy Waldeck, Nate Brown, and Paddy Dougherty) a choir of local students, the Charlottesville High School Orchestra, and some of the stellar artists who helped record the CD, including Jesse Winchester, John D’earth, Shannon Worrell, Sarah White, Trees on Fire, Anne Marie Calhoun, the Hackensaw Boys, and Six Chasing Seven.

Kid Pan Alley founder Paul Reisler and Kid Pan Alley Charlottesville-Albemarle Project Director Terri Allard spent eight weeks during the 2007-08 school year writing 80 songs with more than 1,600 children in eight elementary schools – Albemarle County’s Broadus Wood, Brownsville, Cale, Greer, and Red Hill, Charlottesville’s Jackson-Via and Johnson, and the Peabody School. Eighteen of these songs, with titles including “Hummingbird And The Honeybee,” “My Dog Did My Homework,” “My Shoes Are Spying On Me,” “If You Can’t Love Yourself,” “I Always Wanted A Horse,” “I Do Love Virginia,” and the title track are captured on I Used to Know the Names of All the Stars by many of the great artists who call Charlottesville home, including Sissy Spacek, Corey Harris, John McCutcheon, David Lowery of Cracker, Jesse Winchester, Sparky’s Flaw, Sons of Bill, and Shannon Worrell. The Dave Matthews Band generously donated recording time at Haunted Hollow Studio. Kid Pan Alley’s performances are sponsored in part by The Paramount Theater’s Community Access Fund.  Other chances to learn more about Kid Pan Alley during Charlottesville’s“Kid Pan Alley Week”:  I Used to Know the Names of All the Stars Foxfield Fall 2008 Fundraiser:

Kid Pan Alley started with a brilliant, yet obvious, discovery—children’s imaginations make kids the greatest song co-writers. Songwriting is a way to talk about some of the most important and complex personal and world issues as seen through the wide and perceptive eyes of children. Trapezoid’s Paul Reisler founded Kid Pan Alley with the goal of reinvigorating creativity as a core value in education, one community at a time. Kid Pan Alley has created more than 1,000 songs with some 20,000 elementary school children in communities across the U.S. These songs, which celebrate who we are and who we can be, changed the kids who wrote them, and now they inspire kids and adults all around the country to think and grow. Past CD projects, featuring world-renowned artists including Delbert McClinton, Amy Grant, Kix Brooks, Raul Malo, Suzy Bogguss, and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra, have won Parents’ Choice and NAPPA Gold awards, five ASCAP Foundation awards, and a Grammy nomination. On October 4, 2008, Kid Pan Alley’s Charlottesville-Albemarle Project releases I Used to Know the Names of All the Stars, recorded by some of the artists who call Charlottesville home, including Sissy Spacek, Corey Harris, John McCutcheon, David Lowery of Cracker, Jesse Winchester, Sparky’s Flaw, Sons of Bill, and Shannon Worrell.
